Former Uttar Pradesh CM, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav is no more
Lucknow: Senior politician,
Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav passed away on Monday morning. He
was admitted to the hospital a few days ago due to severe illness and he
breathed his last at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Mulayam Singh Yadav's son
Akhilesh Yadav confirmed this. He was 82 years old. Through this, a big link in
the politics of the country has been broken. He was the Chief Minister of
Uttar Pradesh three times. Mulayam Singh Yadav was born on 22 November
1939 to Murthy Devi and Sugar Singh Yadav on 22 November 1939 in Saifai village
of Etawah district in Uttar Pradesh. He served three consecutive terms as the
Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and also served as the Union Defense Minister.
A long-time MP, he represented Mainpuri constituency in the Lok Sabha. Later he
also served as Member of Parliament from Azamgarh and Sambhal constituencies.
Party leaders and workers used to call him Netaji, the Hindi word for
"respectable". Yadav holds three degrees in Political Science – B.A.
From Karm Kshetra Post Graduate College, Etawah, B.T. from A. K. College,
Shikohabad and M.A. from B. R. College, Agra University. Political career:
Influenced by leaders like Ram Manohar Lohia and Raj Narayan, Mulayam Singh
Yadav was first elected as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly
in 1967. Mulayam Singh Yadav was an 8-time MLA. In 1975, during Indira Gandhi's
Emergency, Yadav was arrested and kept in custody for 19 months. He first
became a Minister of State in 1977. Later, in 1980 he became the president of Uttar
Pradesh Lok Dal (Janata Party), which later became part of Janata Dal (Janata
Party). In 1982, he was elected Leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh
Legislative Council. He held that post till 1985. When the Lok Dal Party split,
Yadav started the Revolutionary Morcha Party Service as Chief Minister: Mulayam
Singh Yadav first became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1989. After the
fall of VP Singh's National Government in November 1990, Chandra joined
Shekhar's Janata Dal (Socialist) party. He continued in power as Chief Minister
with the support of the Congress party. His government collapsed in 1991 when
the Congress withdrew its support following developments at the national level.
Second period In 1992, Mulayam Singh Yadav founded his own Samajwadi
Party. Bahujan entered into an alliance with the Samaj Party for the Uttar
Pradesh Assembly elections to be held in November 1993. The Samajwadi Party and
Bahujan Samaj Party alliance prevented the BJP from returning to power in the
state. Yadav became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh with the support of
Congress and Janata Dal. His stand on the movement demanding a separate state
for Uttarakhand was as controversial as his stand on the Ayodhya movement in
1990. In October 1994, there was a firing attack on Uttarakhand activists in
Muzaffarnagar, for which Uttarakhand activists held him responsible. He
continued as Chief Minister till 1995. Third period In 2002, following the
post-election situation in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the
Bahujan Samaj Party joined forces to form a government led by Dalit leader
Mayawati, but the alliance broke down and the BJP exited the government in
August 2003. A number of rebel MLAs from the Bahujan Samaj Party, with the
support of independents and smaller parties, allowed Yadav to become the Chief
Minister. He was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the
third time in September 2003. Yadav was a member of the Lok Sabha even
when he was sworn in as Chief Minister. In order to fulfill the constitutional
requirement of becoming a member of the state assembly within six months of
taking oath, he contested the assembly by-election from Gunnaur assembly
constituency in January 2004. Yadav won by a record margin, getting nearly 94
percent of the votes. Personal Life: Mulayam Singh Yadav's first wife, Malti
Devi, was brain dead until her death in 2003 due to severe illness while giving
birth to son Akhilesh Yadav in 1974. Akhilesh Yadav was the Chief Minister
of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017. Mulayam Singh Yadav's relationship
with Sadhana Gupta in the 1990s was legalized by the Supreme Court in 2007. His
son Prateek Yadav's wife Aparna Bisht Yadav was in the news recently for
joining the BJP.
