Oil price hike is harmful to India's economy: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar

Washington: India, with a US$2,000 per capita economy, is worried about rising oil prices due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said it was 'breaking our back'.

Addressing a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken after the bilateral talks, Jaishankar said there is deep concern among developing countries about how to meet their energy needs.

Speaking about the war in Ukraine, he said, 'We have privately, publicly, confidentially and consistently taken the position that this conflict is not in anyone's interest'. Returning to dialogue and diplomacy is the best way forward, Jaishankar said.

Asked about the limitations of Russian oil, Jaishankar said, 'Whenever we have been able to contribute something in the past, we have been open to it'. But right now there are some problems, he said.

As Western sanctions have little effect on Russia, G-7 countries and the European Union have imposed oil price caps on Russian crude and refined products to limit Kremlin revenue.

Earlier this month, a statement issued by G-7 finance ministers said the price cap was specifically designed to reduce Russia's revenues and Ukraine's ability to finance the war. US asks India to join alliance to curb Russian oil prices But New Delhi said it would "carefully examine" the proposal before taking any decision
