Bengaluru: Ola, Uber auto service suspended from 12th, 5000 fine for illegal traffic

Bengaluru,: In a meeting held on Tuesday, it was decided to suspend Ola, Uber and Rapido services from Wednesday, October 12, said THM Kumar of the Karnataka Transport Department. Speaking to reporters after a meeting with representatives of Ola, Uber and Rapido, Transport Commissioner THM Kumar said, "Ride aggregators here have proposed to collect the fare approved by the government along with Goods and Services Tax (GST). The proposal of the aggregators will be sent to the state government for approval." According to government rules, autorickshaws have a base fare of Rs 30 for two kilometers, after which a charge of Rs 15 per kilometer is levied. "The aggregators said they will file a fresh application on Wednesday after they were informed that they are not allowed to ply three-wheelers under the current aggregator rules (Karnataka On-Demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rule (Kottar), 2016)," the information said. The department has instructed the aggregators to stop plying autorickshaws on their platforms until the government takes a decision in this regard. "We told them that a decision on the convenience fee will be taken at the state government level. We will not be able to take a decision on it," the transport commissioner said. Aggregators will not be able to operate autorickshaws until the state government modifies the current rules, the commissioner said. He warned that if they drive autorickshaws illegally, they will be fined Rs 5,000 per vehicle. "The department will write to the cyber department to stop autorickshaw services. We cannot do it directly because we don't have the expertise. We will only take action against Ola and Uber (taxi aggregators). We will fine Rs 5,000 per vehicle. We will fine the companies. Autorickshaw drivers will not be fined. Kumar said. Notice to aggregators to stop auto services In the wake of uproar in Bengaluru over the hike in minimum fares for auto-rickshaws, transport department officials including the commissioner met representatives of Ola, Uber and Rapido companies on Tuesday afternoon and held a meeting. Action was taken against these companies following allegations that aggregators operating autorickshaws were charging a minimum of Rs 100, even if the distance was less than two kilometres. Following reports and complaints, the transport department issued notices to ride aggregators asking them to stop autorickshaw services immediately and submit a report within three days. Auto service aggregators Ola and Uber are extorting customers in the name of website. It is learned that the aggregators are charging the base rate set by the government, cutting the minimum fare from Rs 100. This amount was higher than what was proposed by the government. Responding to a question as to why the aggregators were allowed to operate despite the expiry of their licences, the Transport Commissioner informed, "There is an interim order from the Karnataka High Court on the writ appeal. No coercive action shall be taken until the writ appeal is disposed of. The proceedings of the meeting held today will be submitted to the court."
